It was publicly announced late last month, that the University of Farmington Hills, located in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan, was part of an undercover operation run by ICE for the purpose of luring and ensnaring foreign students with actual student visas, who were allegedly committing immigration fraud. The University of Farmington Hills that attracted these students, was promoted online as a “nationally accredited business and STEM institution” with a progressive curriculum and accommodating class schedules, but it had none of those things it promised to offer students because it wasn’t a real university.
Allegedly, the foreign students knew they were attending a fake school and knowingly paid for fraudulent paperwork to preserve their student visa status so they could stay in the United States. This secret operation brought about the arrests of eight student “recruiters” who, together, were paid a total of $250,000 for finding and bringing in 600 other students to join the fraudulent conspiracy. Supposedly, the student recruiters and students that were discovered in this scheme, knew the university was phoney and was the catalyst for fraudulent activity, but they did not know it was being operated by ICE. The eight recruiters face charges of harboring immigrants for profit and conspiracy to commit immigration fraud for a maximum of five years in prison. The other students, who were arrested for participating in immigration fraud, are dealing with deportation.
