ICE Moves More Than 230 Immigrants to New York Area Holding Facilities

New York ICE Detention

New York ICE Detention Attorney

Well over 200 undocumented immigrants who were detained near the U.S. border with Mexico have been transferred to correctional facilities operated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the New York counties of Hudson, Orange and Bergen. This represents a new development in the handling of undocumented immigrants, who are usually housed closer to the area in which they are detained. According to a spokesperson for ICE, the increased presence of undocumented detainees in the state of New York is the result of an effort to find adequate space in federal detention centers, which has been at a premium since the crackdown on immigration put in place by the current administration.

New York ICE Detention on the Rise

According to figures released by the government, federal agents took 98,977 people into custody at the U.S.-Mexico border in April 2019 alone. This represents almost a threefold increase in apprehensions over the course of a year, with 38,243 people taken into custody in April 2018 at the border. The steep increase in border crossers and in apprehensions has resulted in limited space for detainees, who are now being moved around the country in an effort to find adequate housing for these asylum seekers and immigrants. For families already in our area, working with a qualified New York immigration lawyer is a good first step toward resolving immigration issues.
