President Joe Biden Signs Three Executive Orders on Immigration

new immigration policies

While some of the damage caused by the Trump administration to immigrants and their families may be irreversible, new immigration policies put in place by President Joe Biden will help to ease the burden placed on these families over the past four years. On February 2, 2021, President Biden signed three executive orders that will provide added help to families in pursuing their own American dreams in the United States.

Ending Zero Tolerance

One of President Biden’s new immigration policies will end zero tolerance for border crossings. By putting an end to this policy, which was enacted in 2018, the Biden administration will be able to provide a safer and less stressful way for immigrant families to enter the United States and to apply for a visa to live and work here legally. By returning the standards for seeking asylum to pre-Trump levels, this executive order will offer new hope to those who are fleeing dangerous conditions in their former home countries and seeking a new life here in the United States.

Reuniting Families Separated at the Border

Another executive order signed by President Joe Biden will make reuniting parents with children from whom they were separated at the border a priority for the administration and for immigration officials. This will allow some families to locate and recover their children safely after months or even years apart. President Biden’s new immigration policies will establish a task force dedicated to reuniting families who have been separated at the border because of harsh directives issued by the previous administration.

Performing a Comprehensive Review

The third of President Biden’s executive orders issued on February 2 requires all federal immigration agencies to perform a comprehensive review of their policies to determine whether they are in line with the compassionate and equitable treatment that the Biden administration has promised to implement.
