The Barriers of Higher Education for Undocumented Students

Undocumented immigrants are integrated into every part of American society. While some argue we should remove such immigrants, and others argue they should have equal entitlement to the American Dream, there lies another issue when these cases involve young people hoping to receive a higher education. The reason for dilemma is a combination of a few factors.

Why Might Undocumented Immigrants Wish to Obtain a Higher Education in the US?

1. The young person may have been brought over as a child. This factors into the moral question of whether or not the student should be allowed to obtain a higher education because they were never at fault for being an undocumented immigrant. If a person was brought here as a child, that person’s entire life has been established in what that student feels is their homeland. To remove a person from their home, due to undocumented immigration, seems ethically immoral. However, by law, it is considered acceptable to do so.

2. The young person wants to better their life with a career that demands a higher education. A young person seeking a higher education has undoubtedly committed themselves to a more promising and hopeful future. That student might seek to better the country he lives in by becoming a government official, a law enforcement office, a doctor, or other career options that would help the people around him. That student might understand that his/her birthplace does not have the same opportunities the US offers. Morally speaking, it seems wrong to deny a person access to bettering his/her life. Lawfully, it is deemed acceptable and legal.

3. The young person may want to eventually raise a family here and avoid his/her homeland due to poor living conditions. The young person may remember pieces of his/her childhood, or have heard through his/her parent’s perspective, that the living conditions of his/her country are poor and unfit to raise a healthy family. That student may believe that by receiving a higher education, he/she might be able to provide a life of prosperity to his/her future family. Morally, how can we ask a person seeking a better quality and healthy future for his/her family to leave the only place that may offer him/her hope? Yet again, in terms of legalities, that undocumented immigrant student wishing to better his/her family’s future can be removed from a place of sovereignty.

What Should Be Done About Undocumented Immigrants Wishing to Receive a Higher Education?

Every year, roughly 65,000 young undocumented immigrant graduate high school. For some, this accomplishment means everything to that student and family. That student might have been the first in the family to complete high school and the first in the family to crave a higher education. However, the matter of whether or not the student should be allowed to pursue a higher education most often lies in the hands of the law. As a result, it is important that students, or parents of students, wishing to pursue a higher education speak with an experienced immigration lawyer as soon as possible to ensure every possibility is sought out.
